Make sure to get your popcorn ready, sit back and let’s start with the #5 on our best boxing movie list.

#5 Million Dollar Baby

Million Dollar Baby DVD

Some may be surprised that this one got on the list but this is a great movie about the hardships of fighting. Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman, this story is goes deep with very beautiful acting. The story is about Maggie (Hillary Swank) wanting to learn boxing from Frankie (Morgan Freeman) but is refused, reasoning that he does not want to train a girl. Maggie is relentless and willing to learn so Frankie eventually caves in to start training her in the beautiful art of fighting. Not only does she pick up the sport well, she becomes really good at it and sees her career take off. Not going to spoil it all for you but this movie will put you on a rollercoaster of emotions and is not a light popcorn movie. Having said that, we hope you will give this one a shot as at the time of writing it has IMDB rating of 8.1! Not an easy task to achieve.

#4 Ali

Ali DVD

If you have not yet seen the great Ali, you are in for one great biography. Similar to Million Dollar Baby, it’s a drama in itself but this focuses on true events of the great Muhammad Ali. Played by Will Smith as Ali, this movie displays the life of one of the true legendary greats of boxing history. This boxing film is not so much about the fighting skill or Ali but more the story of an up and coming Muhammad Ali as well as influence he had made. This story demonstrates Ali for his accomplishments and his achievements on humanity and civil rights through his boxing and fame. If you have not yet seen Ali, do yourself a favour and schedule it for one of your Saturday evenings. It’s a must-see not just for boxing fans but for any fan of sport. To see the struggles Ali faced and his drive to make this world a better place is truly spectacular and the director of this movie has done a fantastic job. At the time of writing this movie has a 6.8 star rating but make no mistake – it’s an absolute classic and will go down as one of the best boxing movies of all time.

#3 The Fighter

The Fighter DVD

This boxing film is starring none other than Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. These two actors have come together to make one of the greatest boxing movies that have seen on the screens. It’s very difficult to make a movie about fighting or MMA and come through with some originality in it. This story is about the Irish Micky Ward (played by Mark Wahlberg) training to become a pro boxer and is trained by his half-brother Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). Dicky was a boxer himself who has turned into a trainer and is struggling with drugs and crime. And whilst the story itself is not anything ground-braking, what makes this boxing movie into an instant classic is the actor’s ability to pull this off. I must say that when watching this movie, you’ll find yourself becoming immersed into the story and will be pulled in different directions throughout. Additionally, David O. Russell, who is the director of this boxing DVD, is really elevating this movie by displaying the actual boxing scenes in a unique and captivating way. Let’s not get any deeper than this as you’ll want to discover this movie for yourself and it’s certainly not one to miss!

#2 Creed

Creed DVD

Before we get to the number one boxing DVD of all time, let’s look at another boxing story that is connected to it. Adonis Johnson (played by Michael B. Jordan) is the son of none other than the infamous boxing champion Apollo Creed from the Rocky boxing movies. Adonis only was born after the death of his father and the story is about him wanting to step into his father’s shoes and become a boxing champion. To go down this path he decides he needs a mentor and it’s the man himself – Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone, of course). Whilst Rocky does not agree to train Adonis straight away, he eventually decides to help Adonis and starts showing him the ropes of what it takes to become a great boxer. There are many great movements in this film and it’s nothing short of an amazing story that will make you re-watch all the Rocky movies. An absolute classic and a must have to anyone with a boxing DVD collection.

#1 Rocky - The Collection

Rocky DVD

If you have not heard of the Rocky movies, we wonder what planet have you been living on. Joking aside, there is no other boxing movie that could or ever will take the place of Rocky. Rocky has five parts and the story of Rocky has inspired many fighters to dig that little bit deeper. For those 5 of you that don’t know of Rocky, imagine one of those movies that has changes that forever have left its mark on such type of movies. Think Titanic for romance, Matrix for sci-fi, The Godfather for those mafia movies. Rocky is the pinnacle of boxing movies, the one where the main character deals with hardships and tough times, through sweat, blood and tears fights his way to the top. This is what Rocky is in a nutshell and can be seen throughout all the Rocky movies. If you have not yet seen the Rocky movies, strap yourself in for a fantastic weekend as you binge watch these through.

Conclusion

We hope you’ve found our top five boxing movies list useful. There are many noteworthy mentions when it comes to fighting DVDs such as the Raging Bull, Cinderella Man, Southpaw and others. Any of those could have easily made the list of top five. It may no means was an easy assessment of which movies should make the cut but all of the five movies we’ve gone over are an absolute must watch.
